April is already upon us!  Spring has sprung and taxes are due--hopefully everyone will be getting a nice, fat refund this year!!

The "Celebrate the Arts" March Fine Arts Show came down last week, and what a wonderful show it was.  Congratulations and a huge THANK YOU to everyone who participated in this event by entering and sharing your work with a very appreciative public.
With so many wonderful works on display, it was nearly impossible to pick one "favorite," but when the votes were tallied at the end of the month the People's Choice Award was won by 16 year old student artist Summer Van Sickle for her acrylic work entitled "Colorless."  Congratulations, Summer!!
Maria will be posting photos from the show on the sprarts.org website shortly (as soon as I get my act together to send them to her...)

On the Gallery front--our pot luck get-together in the new building last month was well attended and everyone seems very enthusiastic about creating the NEW Endeavor Gallery space.  We received some useful suggestions and have developed a tentative schedule for remodeling the existing area.  First up is a short "work day" scheduled for this coming Saturday--April 8th from 10 a.m. till roughly noon, when we will be taking down existing wall hangings, peg boards, etc. and patching and preparing holes and other blemishes preparatory to painting inside and outside next month.  Please join us if you don't mind a little physical labor!!

One of the most exciting developments to come with the new gallery is the creation of a "learning center" in what will also serve as our general meeting room for "Lunch and Learn" and other programs.  This space will be used for workshops as well asmentoring sessions for home school and other student artists and should give us a greater presence in the community.  To help with funding for the learning center, Shryl Miles is spearheading a grant application process through the Arizona Community Foundation of Cochise.  To this end, and to gain further knowledge about writing the grant proposal, Shryl, Charlene White, and John Gill attended an information workshop in Willcox on April 4th.  Should the application be successful, any monies granted will go toward the purchase of stacking chairs, folding tables, a media cart, a large sink, and other supplies to create a suitable space for projected activities. Applications are due on May 8th and funds will be awarded in early September.   Cross your fingers!!

The featured artist in this month's "One with Art" program at Cochise College Benson Center is Natalie Sudman.  Natalie works in a variety of media and has mounted a unique and exciting exhibit featuring many of her bright and bold abstract "oil on yupo paper" paintings, as well as a number of large pieces in her "Map" series, and a grouping of smaller mixed media pieces from her "Microscopic Life" series inspired by her time working in the Antarctic!!

The show is free and open to the public during regular college hours and is definitely worth a visit!!
And remember--you, too, can be a "Featured Artist"-- just contact me and we will get you on the schedule... Shows can consist of anywhere from 15 to as many as 30 or more works (depending on size), and you are welcome to "team up" with another artist to create a "Two with Art" show...

Our annual Spring Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, April 29th, at the new gallery location on the corner of 4th Street and San Pedro in Benson beginning at 8 a.m!
This event has always been a successful fund raiser for us, and hopefully, this year will be no exception.  Donations have already started coming in; and this year we are able to store any and all donations inside the new building--so please check your closets and garages and other storage areas for those items you no longer need.  If you have larger pieces and need help with moving them, please contact me and we will arrange a pick up date...  Smaller items may be brought to the Gallery on the morning of the sale or you can call or email me and arrange a drop off time at your convenience.
We are going to need lots of help with this event--either sorting and setting up on Friday afternoon, April 28th, or with sales on Saturday the 29th; so please mark your calendars and volunteer if you possibly can!!  We will advertise the sale in the Cochise Trader and the Benson News/Sun and put flyers around town  (will need help with this as well...); plus the Benson Museum folks are having an event that same day, which should help to draw prospective buyers.  It should be a fun and exciting day!!

Due to space constrictions at the Benson Hospital, we will have to wait until MAY 3rd and 4th to undertake the next art and photography change out.
This is a firm date, so do mark your calendars, and plan to pick up works currently on display on those dates; and more importantly--bring "new" pieces in any "hangable" medium--to include photography!--to continue to brighten the walls and halls of the Hospital. We view this event as a community service, as the hospital staff has requested that we continue to supply artwork to create a more cheerful environment for patients, visitors and personnel. This is also a perfect opportunity for all our members to put older works on display and get them out of your closets and studio corners--definitely a win-win situation.
We'll take as many as five pieces from everyone who wishes to share their work--so start thinking about what you might want to put up for the next (roughly) six month exhibit!  Works may be (but do not have to be) for sale  (and yes--we do sell pieces from the Hospital on a fairly regular basis!); and --because this IS a community service event, there is no commission charged for any sales!  If you have questions, please contact me by return email...

Upcoming events:  The Art League of Willcox "Anne Boyd Wade Art and Photography Show" will be available for viewing beginning this Friday, April 7th, through Sunday afternoon, April 9th at the Willcox Community Center.  For more information, check out their Facebook page (Willcox Art League).
They have lots of entries and it should be another great art show in southeastern Arizona!!

Our own Bernie Fierro will be hosting an Open Studio Tour at his Lucky Pup Ranch on Saturday, April 22nd from roughly 10 a.m. till 3 p.m.  Take the Mescal Rd. exit off I-10, head north, and follow the "Lucky Pup Ranch" signs.  It is a bit of a drive over dirt roads, but worth the trip to see Bernie's wonderful paintings and unique and amazing sculptural pieces.  For further information, you can email Bernie at bernardfierroart@gmail.com

Some final notes:  We are proud to announce that SPRAC lifetime member Jim Kidd--formerly a long time resident of Sierra Vista and very active supporter of the Arts Council--was the recent winner of the eastern Regional Creative Veteran's Competition in the Color Photography division with his 16 x 20 photograph entitled "Angel Sky!!"  Jim "retired" to the Washington, DC area a couple of years ago; and we are happy to see that at the age of 90 he is still going strong and "celebrating the arts!"  His winning photo has been entered in the NATIONAL finals.  You go, Jim!!!!  We'll look forward to your next visit to Cochise County!

And on another happy note--I am very happy to report that--inspired by the example of Larraine and Mel Milne mentioned in last month's newsletter--we have received more generous financial support from additional members of the Arts Council to help with financing the new Gallery space and other endeavors!  A very hearty and heart-felt THANK YOU to Brenda Peo, Martha Sprenkle, Fred and Joan Ruth, and Kat Mickelson for your recent contributions!!  If anyone else is feeling generous, we are never too proud to accept a donation.  No amount is too small, and remember, there is a tax benefit for your donation.  Don't let that refund burn a hole in your pocket!!

OK--that's enough!!  Go be creative and have a great month.  Hope to see you soon!!          Linda
